If the thought of keeping your children entertained and engaged during the long school holiday feel like a burden to you, take comfort that you are not alone. A lot of parents feel the same way but there are always some creative ways to handle this.

Firstly, remember that holiday is a time of respite for the kids. To take a break from the school and homework. A time to relax, play and engage in enriching activities that they can’t do during school days. It is also a time for the family to spend more time together.

With a bit of imagination, there are always fun activities that the whole family can do together. There are simple projects that you can initiate to get the kids to learn about the world around them in a more direct way instead of from the text book.

Here are some suggestions for activities for kids to do during school holiday.

01. Make A Story Book

Gather the kids together with some papers, coloring pencils and a stapler… and make a story book! Or any kind of book, for that matter.

You can start off by making up a story. And then kids can add on to the story line. Write one to two lines per page and have your kids draw the illustration. Get some old magazine and newspapers to do a collage. That would be a lot of fun!

Once it is done, the kids can have their name printed on the cover as the co-authors. And they can proudly read their book to friends and other members of the family.

02. Start A Project To Learn About Things Around Them

There are always things that we can learn simply by observing and recording things around us. School holiday is a good time to train the kids to have fun learning about their world with a different approach – by observation and recording what they see.

Learn about the weather. Start a project to monitor the weather for a few weeks. Create a daily chart to shows if it is sunny, cloudy or rain. Use graphic. Play the weather man forecasting weather change. Observe the fashion, see what people are wearing. Look at the trees and flowers. Take photos of people, sky, trees and flowers.

03. Do a Family Tree Chart

Learn about people in their immediate family by making a Family Tree chart. Beginning with themselves, drawing line to link to their own sibling and the parents….to cousins and nephews, uncles, aunts, grand ma and grand pa.

Write down their names, age, where they live and what they do.

Cut out some old photos or have the kids draw portraits of their families members.

Along the way, I am sure there are stories you can tell the kids about who and who and what are the funny things that happened to them.

Apart from doing fun projects at home, the family can also visit the museum, go fishing or camping in the country. Many of us live in the city. We are just so used to racing around with little time to stop and think of what we like to do. Holiday is a good time to slow down, relax and explore new things to do and new places to visit as a family. If we can spend a bit of time to plan for what to do in the holiday, it can be the most fun and enriching experience for the kids and the parents.
